Founding Vision Doronko Hoikuen represents a distinctive educational network across Japan featuring 190+ kindergartens and nursery schools operated by the Doronko Kai Social Welfare Corporation since 1998. Founder Aika Yasunaga rejected Japan's traditionally rigid, standardized early education approach. She sought spaces where "children could connect with the earth and with nature—touch leaves and grass, run barefoot in the mud, play with sand and water" to build immune systems and engage physically with natural environments. Educational Philosophy The model emphasizes asobi (play) as the primary learning vehicle rather than rote instruction. Daily practices include outdoor exploration regardless of weather, gardening and animal care, mud play and sensory experiences, and seasonal rituals reflecting Japanese culture. Architectural Design Facilities feature minimalist, nature-integrated designs with natural wood and open interiors, traditional engawa (wooden corridors) serving as active learning spaces, and no fixed playground equipment—instead, water wells, grass, stones, sand, soil, and rice fields. Inclusive Education Model Doronko Kai operated integrated settings with children with and without disabilities learning together under unified professional teams, influencing national policy reform in 2022.
